EAST MEETS EAST

Contemporary Art from Uganda

The exhibition ‘East Meets East’ provides an exploratory view of the current generation of Uganda visual artists. The exhibition wishes to undermine the common perception of East African visual art as mainly formed under western expectations and influences, and it does so by bringing their own artistic voice rooted in materials, traditions and discourse of their lived experiences, their identities, philosophies and imagined futures.

At the same time, the exhibition makes present an urgent need of the Ugandan artists for new and sometimes surprising exhibition spaces. This is an opportunity to display their work in a new space, to offer fresh perspectives, and to examine alternative existences for local art, on international platforms.

‘East Meets East’ creates a snapshot of contemporary Uganda and its budding art scene that is on the outskirts of the dominant cultural capitals, similar to the Middle Eastern Israeli art scene. Both seem to be looking for re-validation elsewhere.

Could this be a story of abandonment, regression, and rupture? Maybe it is a story of connection, sharing, networking and exchange. Possibly both.

Participating Artists

This exhibition brings fourteen Ugandan artists to Israel with a variety of mediums spanning photography, to painting, installation, poetry, sound, and collage. The participating artists are; Pamela Enyonu, Roshan Karmali,  Doddridge Busingye, Gloria Kiconco, Charity Atukunda ,Trevor Aloka, Mubiru Denis, Olivia Mary Nantongo, Elizabeth K. Kobusinge, DeLovie Kwagala, Kibuuka Mukisa Oscar, Esther Mbabazi, Hibotep and Odur Ronald.

‘East Meets East’ was made possible by the New Gallery Artists’ Studios in Jerusalem and CoCuDi Center for Cosmopolitan Cultural Dialogue and is curated by independent curator Robinah Nansubuga. We also thank Roshan Karmali and Pamela Enyonu for their contribution.
