The exhibition is a collaboration of CoCuDi Center and Ugandan curator Robinah Nansubuga and originated from ‘East Meets East’ exhibition at the New Gallery Teddy.

המושג פני השטח מבקש: התייחסו לדברים כפשוטם, האמינו למראה עיניים, למגע ידיים, לכאן ועכשיו. במבט ראשון נראה כי זוהי נקודת המוצא של תערוכה זו – אסופת טכניקות, מוכרות יותר או פחות, הנעה בין חומריות לקטנית, דרך ציור וצילום ועד עבודת מחשב. במבט שני ניתן לזהות כי זוהי הצעה לחתור תחת פני השטח, להעמיק את ההיכרות הראשונית לכדי חיבור עמוק, מעשיר ומשמעותי.

על אף שבשנים האחרונות סימן עולם האמנות את האמנות האפריקאית העכשווית כ”דבר החם הבא”, יש לזכור כי אין להתייחס לאמנות אפריקאית כאל יחידה הומוגנית אחת. אפריקה היא יבשת מורכבת ולא מדינה כפי שנוטים להתייחס אליה לעיתים קרובות מידי. מתוך כך מוצע לבחור בטכניקת הצמצום והמיקוד, במקרה זה באמנות עכשווית מאוגנדה, כנקודת מוצא פרטנית במסע לגילוי אמנות מאפריקה.

גם אם פני השטח שלה נראים שונים, תערוכה זו מבוססת על מרכיבים אנושיים הרלוונטיים לכולנו. השתהות המבט על העבודות תאפשר למרכיבים כמו זהות, יחסי כוחות, מגדר, אקלקטיות יופי ועוד, לעלות ולצוף מעלה, מעל פני השטח. יחד איתם תגיע חוויה תרבותית מקשרת. יתכן שבאופן זה יווצר מפתח למפגש חדש ונקי הקורא תיגר על תפיסות מוכרות של הצגת אמנות אפריקאית. אמנים משתתפים: אסתר מבבאזי, צ’ריטי אטוקונדה, דניס מובירו, קיבוקה מוקיסה אוסקר, אליזבת’ קובוסינג’ה, אוליביה מרי ננטונגו, אודור רונלד, דלובי קוואגלה, היבוטפ.

The concept of surface seeks: to see things as they are; Treat things simply, believe in the sight of your eyes, the touch of your hands, the here and now. At first glance this seems to be the starting point of this exhibition: a collection of techniques, some more familiar to us than others, ranging between eclectic materiality through painting, photography to digital illustrating. At a second glance, however, it can be seen that this is a proposal to undermine the surface, to deepen the initial acquaintance into an enriching and meaningful connection.

Although in recent years the art world has marked contemporary African art as the “next hot thing”, it should be clear that African art should not be treated as a single homogeneous unit. Africa is a complex continent and not a country, as one tends to treat it too often. Therefore it is worth choosing the technique of narrowing, in this case, focusing on contemporary art from Uganda. The exhibition is an individual starting point in a journey to discover art from Africa as a whole. Even if its surface looks unfamiliar, this exhibition is based on human elements that are relevant to all of us. Peeling them will allow elements like identity, power relations, gender, beauty eclecticism and more, to rise and float upwards. An experience that will create a key to a new and clean dialogue that challenges familiar perceptions of the presentation of African art in Israel.
